It's officially designated the colour of the year, and in my opinion, it's the most universally flattering tone for Summer. Especially wonderful with white and beautiful in beachwear, turquoise adds the most refreshing flash of cool colour.

What to wear in the heat to keep your career cool

What to wear to work in the Summer can be perplexing. Hot, humid weather outside, sticky travel conditions and cool air conditioning inside, plus the need for appropriate attire, create a dressing dilemma.

Here are a few tried and true trends that help keep you cool, comfortable and chic:

1. Get a lightweight pant suit - pale grey is great option as it coordinates with everything in the colour spectrum from white to black, as well most patterns and prints. Select pants with a form flattering, medium leg width, add a great pair of medium to high heels, then there's no need for pantyhose or socks - you'll feel cool but appropriately attired.

2. Day shift - you can't go wrong with a shift dress - a classic wrap or crew-neck style is superb. Sleeveless, yes. But, professionally so. Simply add a shapely jacket or cardie for artic air conditioning or important presentations.

3. The great white sh-irt - the year-round staple creates a clean, crisp canvas for Summer accessories, such as multi-strand necklaces and bountiful belts. Wear with perfect pants, a-line or straight knee-length skirts plus heels and you can't go wrong.

4. Heels with staying power - as for those heels - no need to wilt as the temperature rises. Get extra lift from heels that help not hinder your day. Substantial straps and hearty heels add height and supplement your silouhette without slowing you down. Avoid panty hose (does any workpalce mandate those these days?), simply moisturize those calves to avoid dryness from air conditioning.

5. A gem of a jacket - get this to add to any piece for automatic outfit and career advancement. Choose a cut that best flatters your figure and put it on over a dress, pants, skirt or even jeans for an augmented professional appearance.

Sleeve Peeve

What’s up with sleeves? Have you noticed that many tops have little, cappy-type sleeves this season? They do nothing for me. Being a bit broader across the top than the bottom, these cropped critters add unwanted width to my shoulders. See…nice dress, shame about the sleeves:

Even the classic T-shirt seems to be coming up short in the sleeve department, barely covering the top of my arms. Feels strange and sometimes stick out at odd angles, see…

Designers and manufacturers – please, a few centimetres extra fabric provides a much more flattering fit.

So, I’m going for the all or nothing approach – sleeveless or at least elbow length sleeves. Should help avoid farmers tan lines too!

Double dipping in denim...

Well - what do you think of this season's return to double denim? You know, the jeans with a denim shirt or jacket. Back in the 80s and 90s we did denim head to toe. But, what about the revival of this well-loved look? Here's a version from The Gap...

To me, it's a denim dilemma...you want to be on trend, but I can't help feel that this was a fashion fad that should have rested in peace after it's passing.

Don't think I'll be going for it anytime soon, and anyways, these days we have so many other options, that I'll be adding totally different tops to my denim jeans and skirts, or dusting off that jean jacket to add to the new chino or flouncy skirt...

But then again...

And early too! Throwing us Canadian gals off at a tangent. Being used to hanging onto the safety blanket of my parka, I've been a little at a loss for what to wear. Thankfully, my trusty trench has come to the rescue! (Puchased two or three Springs ago at Esprit and still going strong.)

So, if you're not sure what to wear or where to spend your hard-earned cash during this early Spring, take it from me, you can't go wrong with a trench. Dress it up or down, you'll never be out of style or regretting your purchase.

Mirror, mirror on the wall...

Is it just me...or do some mirrors make us look our worst and some make us look great? Case in point, my closet mirror seems to add a few pounds. Really annoying for a mirror that's located exactly where I try on outfits and get set for the day. And, as for the mirror in my parents' powder room, it cruelly augments every blemish, line and wrinkle. Scary.

So, I'm sticking with my bathroom mirror. Perhaps it's the light, perhaps it's an illusion, but it is a much kinder, gentler mirror, giving me the confidence to go forth and face the world each morning. Remember, great style is not just about how you look, but how you feel.

I was a skeptic. I just couldn't risk it. But this week, I was desperate.

Almost three weeks into a persistent flu bug, with no chance to visit my hair stylist, I tried Clairol Nice n Easy Root Touch-Up and ta da! It has done more to perk me up than anything. Why have I never tried this product before? Why did I tolerate up to two weeks of ratty roots? The colour match is perfect, the product is easy to use. This is the best $10 pick-me-up ever. Now I'm a believer...

I couldn't help giggle at the names J. Crew has given its new chinos. Here's the Destroyed Scout Chino: Conjures up quite the image of those poor scouts doesn't it? But, J. Crew doesn't stop there! Enter the destroyed Boyfriend Chino:

If you are feeling a little more humanitarian you might prefer the Broken-in Boyfriend (below). Oh my, I'm wiping the tears (of laughter) from my eyes.

Of course, what J.Crew is actually referring to is their fabric treatment for the reintroduced chino. It has been washed and bashed (as far as I can tell) to reflect already worn-in pants. That's the look. So if you happen to have your old 90s preppy pants in storage, they may just work ...

Ugg boots celebrate 30 years this year. How did these sheepskin sensations become so popular, especially here in the great white north where water resistense and -40 insulation is essential?

Granted, the Australian entity has introduced a weather proof line recently, but Ugg became a mainstay and must-have long before the line adpated to our cold climate. It's not simply the comfort, the boot that put the Ugg in uggly is a fashionista favourite. I'm not a fan, but how about you? Do you wear Ugg boots? Am I missing the point?

The new Toronto city policy of paying for plastic bags in store is doing a great job encouraging most of the folks I know to take reusuable bags to the grocery store. In fact, if I forget my hessian haulers, I feel quite guilty.

But, what I didn't realize is that the anti-plastic policy does not just apply to frequent food purchases, but every retail outlet and that includes clothes. Yes, when you mooch the mall these days, you are expected to take along your own bags. I'm all for environmental protection and saving our precious planet, but somehow taking a reusable bag when you buy an item of apparel seems icky. I want a fresh new bag to go with that fresh white top and especially undies!

A friend recenly sent me on a mission - the ultimate challenge for the warrior of wardrobe basics, the knight of necessities, the princess of plain...OK, you get my gist. Yes, my quest is to find the holy grail of the closet - the ultimate plain white T.

Go back 5 years and there was no problem finding this idyllic item - 95% cotton, 5% Spandex, crew neck. But, in these days of organics, boho style and more froo-froo fashions, the plain white T (PWT) has become as rare as a man in a mall.

Does this ever happen to you? Something catches your eye at the mall and then you can't get it out of your head. Take this past weekend, for example. Hubby and oldest son needed shoes. Being males of the species, this was a one store stop. They made their selections, barely stopping to try on. As we left the store at lightning speed, a pair of sandals caught my eye and have been on my mind ever since.

I shouldn't really be spending on such items right now. I don't really need another pair of sandals, but oh, these would be so useful. Mid heel height, dress em up or down, would work with pants, jeans or skirts...I'm just going to have to head back to the store (sans male accompaniment) and satisfy my curiosity. Will they look and feel as good as I have pictured in my mind? Only a quick trip to the mall will tell...

Spring Bling!

If, like me, you're getting bored of the same old sweaters and woolies as winter goes on and on, then consider adding a little bling to get you through to Spring.

Yes, accessorize to survive until warmer days permit you to put away your cold weather closet.

Here are a few items that can be worn now, and into Spring and Summer.

The scarf: Select something soft and flowing to add to your coat now, lighter jackets in the Spring and as an accent to Summer outfits. This purple version from The Gap will soften black and grey work suits now and add pop to Summer whites.

Beads and Bangles: Add a twist to your wrist with these Banana Republic bangles. This colour palate will brighten plain sweaters and add pizzazz to bare wrists when the temps and sleeves beging to rise.

Get a jump on Spring with a jacket

Well, you just can't help it. The weather sneaks above freezing, and our minds jump to Spring. If it also puts you in the mood to shop, one of the most useful pieces you can add to your closet is a transitional jacket. A great jacket quickly and simply adds style to basics such jeans, white blouses and so many of the pieces you already own. And, there's a great selection already in store and online.

Take the trench, for example. Wear the one you have or Spring for the new trench in a slew of new hues, such as burnt orange, sunshine yellow and this fresh and functional blue from The Gap.

The casual tailoring of Safari style is still sharp. Add an Out of Africa inspired jacket to jeans, tailored or casual pants or top off floaty or formal skirts and dresses.

Realistically, we are in Canada, and it will be a while yet before we temps are in the teens, but keep these closet classics in mind as you scan the stores for Spring style.

Well, I admit it. I was wrong. I predicted that leggings would be a one season wonder. I even scoffed at the idea that any of us would wear them, and here we are in the Fall of 2008 and dare I say it? Leggings have become a wardrobe staple!

So, in these tight monetary times, if you want to update your Fall portfolio for a mere $30-$50, go grab yourself a pair of black leggings. Team them with long sweaters (those that reach mid-thigh) and flat/medium heel boots, or even wear under short to knee length jersey dresses along with your ballet flats, as per this Old Navy look.

Yes, leggings can create a whole new look and life for some of your existing pieces and provide you with a flexible, fashionable option for Fall.

Hitting the high street - shopping in the UK

I have just returned from my homeland, and hit the high streets of Britain to take a look at the trends that might cross the pond this Fall.

First and foremost, there seems to be the perception among many that shopping in jolly old England is far ahead of here. Not true. We have an equally good selection of shops and styles, quality products and great prices here in Canada. Any difference in trends seems to have more to do with climate, than sense of style. So don't feel that you're behind in the interntional fashion field. I think there's more of an international "exchange" of everyday fashion, rather than one country following another.

However, here are a couple of hot looks that may hit the mall here.

First, the flirty forties. Inspired by an upcoming movie based on the love life of writer Dylan Thomas and featuring Kiera Knightly and Sienna Miller, flimsy, floral fabrics are ubiquitous in England. I haven't seen too much of this look here yet. If Canadian buyers and retailers go down this retro-road, it's most likely to be next spring. This lovely look is far too feeble for Canadian winters.

Second, the Mary Jane shoe. This ladylike look is already here. A pair of these beauties will update your wardrobe in a one shot deal. They're perfect with pants and skirts and will keep you feeling modern through the Fall, Winter and through next Spring, especially in a non-traditional colour such as caramel, cranberry or soft grey. One warm day and a bunch of us moms chatting in the school yard were all hot and bothered. Not that we weren't enjoying temperatures in the teens, but the balmy breeze signaled the impending arrival of one of the most terrifying times of year: THE BIG REVEAL!

Let's face it, uncovering our bodies from our winter layers feels uncomfortable ,and most of us are quite self conscious about it until we get used to the freedom of lighter, brighter Summer style.

Is there anything we can do to make the transition less intimidating? First, it's unlikely that we'll head directly to below freezing to tropical temperatures, so ease yourself into the unveiling with transitional pieces, such as three-quarter sleeve tops, light-weight pants, skirts and capris.

Prep pasty legs and arms with tinted moisturizer, and treat your feet to a pedicure. Shave, wax or bleach unwanted hair and stock up on sunscreen. Then, add your two best accessories - a great smile and a confident stride. Remember, we're all in this together.

Real makeup tips from top celebrity stylist

I recently attended a launch event for new Listerine Whitening Strips (more about this product innovation soon.) The evening featured tips from celebrity makeup artist, Scott Patric, who can count Katie Holmes and Gisele Bundchen among his high profile clients.

With my Real Canadian Style hat on (not literally), I wondered would someone who works with the world's most famous women understand the time-strapped, do-it-yourself dilemma of us everyday folks?

Turns out Scott is down to earth and not totally star struck. He knows that most of us have limted resources - both time and money. So what's his recommendation for us rushing-out-the-door-oops-I'm-running-late-again-and-my-son's-lost-a-snowboot stars?

1. Tinted moisturizer

2. Curl eyelashes (quicker than mascara)

3. A sweep of blush

4. Lip gloss

Shouldn't take more than two minutes.

Here's Scott and I at the event...I also asked him his professional opion on getting lipstick to stay put. I find I can't keep my lip colour on for more than two minutes. While it's a bit of an upfront investment, Scott finds that higher end lipsticks, such as Chrstian Dior have staying power.

Shopping USA

My eldest son's hockey team had a tournament in Michigan, USA recently. What does this have to do with style, you ask, unless musty masks and sweaty socks are "it" this season? Well, actually, the enlightened Dad who planned the weekend, scheduled a trip to the mall for the moms. We only had an hour, but accompanied by another power shopper, this Shopping USA virgin managed to get a taste of what American malls have to offer.

First, what a choice! We only made it to three stores - The Limited, J. Crew and Macy's, but my shopping companion and I were hyperventilating at the sight before us. Tons of tops in every style and shape. A plethora of pants. Beautiful bags and, a feast of footwear.
And yes, it's true. The prices and deals are amazing, enhanced last weekend by sales.

Between the two of us, we managed to purchase 3 tops, 1 blouse, 1 pair of pants and 2 pairs of shoes. And, all in 60 minutes. Admittedly, we were a couple of minutes late returning to the bus, and were driven away staring longingly back at the mall entrance, but we can update our Spring closet with a few great pieces each that will remind us of a fun shopping frenzy, and a great weekend of hockey. Our boys won the tournament in style!

As I slip and slide my way around a snowy and slushy Toronto, at least I can do it in style, at last, I have invested in a great pair of boots.

I suspect that no other country can lay claim to creating and marketing such an array of warm, waterproof wonders as Canada, so why, oh why was I struggling on with flimsy fashion boots, high heels and leaking leather? Or my massive muckluk lookalikes more suited to mountain rangers than the mall and main street?

As is the Real Canadian Style philosophy, you won't look good, unless you feel good. Fear of falling, cold toes and wet feet, certainly do not constitute comfort, and neither do clunky clompers that make it necessary to carry another pair of footwear and niftily change as soon as you arrive anywhere. So, like me, vow in this season of sales to review your boot booty.

Out of step with Style

Ever get the feeling that something is missing from your closet? No, not that you left your scarf/gloves/jacket behind somewhere, but that you're lacking the pieces that keep you feeling in step with style?

Now, I'm all for classic clothing - simple pieces to build an integrated and easy to wear selection. But right now, with all the patterns, pleats, ruching and ruffles out there, my simple sweaters and toned-down T's are feeling a bit boring.

The good news is that if you do have a closet full of modern classics, it's easy to update by adding one or two fancier pieces of apparel. For example, I'm loving the look of interesting knits. Here's a great example from Victoria's Secret online that can be worn over a sweater, T or tank with jeans or pants. It's also a great cover-up, as we shed our coats and move into Spring. Likewise for this interesting wrap/cardi from Seven for all Mankind.

And, instead of simple v or crew neck T's, take a look at some of these new more delicious, attention-to-detail designs. These tops are from Banana Republic.

All it takes is the addition of one or two tops to beat that out-of-step with style mood, and feel fashionable once again.

Spring Style Assessment

It's all about the letter "P" this Spring - Primary colours, Patterns and Prints, Preppy dressing and Paper bags. Yes, paper bags! Let me explain...

First, primary colours are everywhere and are a cheerful change from muted hues. To avoid looking like a kids' TV presenter, wear only one piece of strong red, blue, green or yellow with toned down basics such as white, grey and denim. The Gap and J. Crew looks shown here:

Geometric patterns and bold prints are inspired by the sixties and seventies (and wallpaper.) If you are petite, keep patterns and prints in proportion, and everyone should keep to one single strong piece and accompany it only with plain apparel and accessories. Here are some J. A throw back to the 80s, the preppy look is easy to wear for most. In order to avoid looking frumpy, ensure a form fitting fit and add heels or reveal great legs with mini skirts and flats (when the weather warms.) The following are from the prince of prep, Ralph Lauren and Banana Republic.

I'm referring to one of the P's as paper bags, because, honestly, what are some of the designers thinking? Following last Summer's empire waists, some tops and dresses have become even more shapeless, and look like they were patterned after a sandwich sack. Unless you are really tall and slim, you don't stand a chance in these styles, and even if you are, there are plenty of other pieces that will look better on you! I went to the sales at the mall yesterday and took a quick assessment of the bargains to be had. The sales are a great time to invest in those "secondary" items in your closet. (The classics and wardrobe building basics rarely get reduced.) So, if you would like to punctuate your closet with items such as a colourful coats and camis, shiny shirts and textured tops, take a trip to the mall and get inspired.

First, if you're in the market for evening or cocktail wear, are you ever in luck! The stores are packed with party dresses and shiny and shimmery tops. Judging by the quantities still out there, prices will be drastically reduced even more. So, if you're lucky enough to have occasions coming up requiring a little dress-up, such as some soirees or a cruise, now's the time to shop. Here's a versatile look from Banana Republic.
When it comes to footwear, it seems that shoes in every style are still available. Boots, on the other hand (or should I say foot), appear to be in limited supply. Especially options in black. These brown beauties are from Aldo.

As far as I could tell, there are quite a few options available when it comes to coats, especially wool coats in a all lengths. Classic colours may be harder to find, but if you've been waiting to invest in a winter white or radiant red, this just might be the time to do it. Puffer jacket from The Gap.

The Shopping Dilemma

Why is it that when you're searching for something specific, such as a great top to wear to a Holiday event or the right pair of boots, you just can't seem to find it? And then, when you're innocently out there, just walking down the street or passing through the mall with not a thought of purchasing something for yourself - there it is! That perfect item. Argh! What's a smart, stylish woman to do?

With budget considered, here's what I do. If the item is a wardrobe staple that I have been seeking for a long time, I go for it. Case in point, I had been keeping my eyes peeled for the perfect, long, black, classic coat, and suddenly there it was - when I wasn't even looking (and on sale, I might add.) The fit was perfect, I just had to get it. I wore it for the first time this past weekend and I know I made the right choice and this piece will be there for me for years.

This classic red sweater is from Victoria's Secret online - go for it!

On the other hand, buyer beware when items catch your eye, but they're not something you would typically wear or you don't have an occasion to wear them to. If you need a great seasonal dress and you spot one - go for it, but see one and buy it waiting for an occasion to arise can be a mistake. By the time the occsasion does arise, you will have changed your mind! This gorgeous sherling coat is from Danier - it would make a classic wardrobe staple for some.

My only exceptions to this rule are bargains - you know, the great little top that's on sale for $20 or less. You might just find it comes to hand and is just right for one of those "don't know what to wear" days or events.

End of Summer hair needs extra care!

Do you find at this time of the year, as you transition into your Fall fashions, that your hair seems out of sync? Those Summer days and exposure to sun, sea and sand might leave hair looking a little tired. Whether you are considering a new cut or keeping the same style, according to Pantene consulting stylist, Justin German, end of summer hair is often in need of more than normal shampoo and conditioner.

To achieve hair that's healthy, shiny and manageable, German recommends treating hair with specialized products, designed to meet the individual needs of your crowning glory. Does this mean an expensive trip to the salon? Not necessarily. There are a range of new products on the market, such as the Pantene Pro-V range that make at home treatments fast, easy and afforable.

Haven't used an at home hair treatment before? Here are some tips from German, co-owner of the Shagg Salon in Toronto:

First, get a wide tooth comb that will evenly distribute the treatment product you use and not pull and break your hair.
Always apply treatments root to end, concentrating a little more on the ends.
The product you choose depends on your hair type and personal needs. If your hair tends to be oily, you may prefer a rinse-out treatment. Curly hair tends to be a little dryer, so a leave-in will probably be a better choice. There’s no miracle recipe, you may have to experiment until you find what’s right for you.
Always follow the directions on the treatment packaging for best results.
If you colour your hair, sun exposure could have caused your shade to fade faster. Use a leave-in treatment that acts as an intense moisturizer. There are products available especially for color damage that help maintain vibrancy and smoothness.
Hair treatments are not a replacement for your regular conditioner though; use that too!

The temperature plummeted for a couple of days and this reluctantly got me thinking about Fall fashion. I started my first focussed forays into Fall fashion online, and came across so many ruffled shirts that I was transported back to a significant time in my life - the 80s.

Suddenly, I am coming of age, graduating high school, leaving home and heading off to university and all in the company of one of my most favourite shirts ever. A pink candy striped, ruffled, Lady Diana-inspired number. I loved that shirt, not just because it was chic (trust me, at the time, it was chic), but becasue it represents such a key time in my life. Funny how a piece of clothing can be such a momento.

And now, ironically, the ruffled shirt represents another key time in my life - the realisation that I am at an age when I am not only seeing the trends again, but maybe too old to wear them this time around. (You know that old adage that if you're seeing a trend for the second time in your life, then you shouldn't be wearing it.) Hmmm... I haven't actually started any Fall shopping yet, but when I do, I know I'm not giong to be able to resist trying on a ruffled shirt or two. And anyways, the return of the ruffle is mostly more subdued than the 80s uber-ruffle. In fact, more suited to my current age. Some of those early 80s fashions were a little frumpy for teens (remember the early days of Lady Diana in those terrible dresses and hats?)

By the way, if you go for the ruffled look, balance it our with classic jeans or demin skirts for a casual look, or tailored pants and skirts for more fomal occasions. We're on a bit of a theme here, after last week's Wardrobe Workout, we are focussing on fit. Not keeping fit (although that is the best way to look and feel your best), no, how to get clothing that fits, feels and looks its best on different body types.

The first step, of course, is assessing and understanding your body type. If you think you know, think again. Our bodies change as we age, exercise, diet and, potentially the biggest change of all, become moms. So, if this is something you have never or not recently thought about, it's time to give yourself an update.

The following link provides a good overview of the basic body types (and how to dress for them.) The golden rule is no matter the fashions or fads, dress first for your body type and you will look your best. The other key point is dressing for your proportions. You need to keep that in mind no matter your body type. Petites need scaled down versions of many items and prints to avoid be overwhelmed. Taller folks need substantial pieces (longer jackets, skirts and awesome accessories) for appropriate impact.

Keep Your Shirt On!

It's hot, hot, hot and some of my Summer tops are not, not, not. So, I dashed out to the mall to pick up a few fresh halters and T's, and was stunned to see how much Fall fashion is filling the racks and shelves. It's a little depressing, seeing as I am only just getting into the swing of Summer. I can't even start to think about what I will be wearing in September and take in the trends. But one thing I couldn't avoid is that shirts are showing up everywhere in pinstripe, checked, plaid and plain.

What's new about shirts, I hear you ask? Well, they are certainly more shaped for the female form than ever before with nips and tucks that make them suitable tucking in or leaving out. Sleeves range from short and puffed to 3/4 french cuffed. And, the leading influences seem to be western style and menswear. The best news about shirts is that they will coordinate with all your existing wardrobe basics from jeans to formal pants and slim skirts. Here are a few examples.

The shirt dress gets even more, well...shirty. The following menswear-inspired versions are from The Gap. Right now, I can't imagine wearing this look - reminds me too much of wearing my husband's shirts, because they were the only things that fitted me when I was pregnant.

Wait a while to shop for new shirts until later in a Summer when you'll know more about how you feel about Fall fashions and what will coordinate with what's already in your closet.

Summer Classics

Following our focus on dresses, there was a request for a review of classic pieces that can form the foundations of a Summer wardrobe. Items that you can rely on year after year. My top ten is listed below. The key to keeping these pieces current will be accessorizing with seasonal colours and accents.

1. The Linen Suit (or at least linen or linen-blend pants) - cool, comfortable and adaptable for casual to smart occasions. Look for medium wide legs, not too tight a fit and colours classics such as white, black, brown or beige. I have a pair of beige linen pants from three or four Summers ago that I love. They're great with everything from a crisp white shirt and T's in just about any colour. These are from Banana Republic.

2. The Denim skirt - great at any time of year. Wear with flip-flops, espadrilles or sandals in the summer and a great pair of boots when the temperature dips. To get the most mileage out of this item, purchase a knee-length, straight or slighly flared version in dark denim. Here's Gap's version.

3. Sandals and flip flops - Ahh. The joy of open toes, no tights, no socks. For a classic pair of sandals select something similar to these with a medium heel and a colour classic. These fabulous flat flip flops (try saying that fast 10 times!) will be a mainstay (from The Gap). the sandals are from Banana Republic.

4. Crisp shirt - Again, a year round staple which becomes even more verstaile in the Summer. Wear with linen pants or denim skirt, or use as a cover up against sun, breeze or over a swim suit. Banana Republic version with 3/4 sleeves is a useful summer option.

5. The t-shirt - Can't beat the plain white T for adaptability. Seeing as these don't tend to last from season to season, branch out by picking up a few in the latest colours and you'll bring those basics bang up to date. I like versions with a little stretch for comfort and holding their shape. Smart Set, RW and Co and Gap (pictured here have great selections.)

6. The dress - Summer wouldn't be summer without a great dress. There's nothing simpler than slipping one of with sandals or flips flops and heading out the door. This jersey dress up or down leaf print is from Banana Republic.

7. Floaty skirt - Cooler than the denim skirt, the floaty skirt in plain or print is another adaptable item. Once again, dree up with heels or don with flip flops and keep up-dated with new looks T's and Tops. For extra floaty and flouncy versions, keep top slim and sleek. 8. Shorts, Bermuda's or Capris - Take your pick or get a great pair of each. Choose classic colours like khaki, white or olive and reveal your legs as the temperature rises.

9. In the bag - Woven or wicker bags go from office to park to beach. Get one in neutral and you'll be happy you did all summer long. Payless option pictured here.

10. A great bathing suit - You can't beat solid colours - chocolate brown is a great option. This sophisticated tankini and white bikini are from Land's End. If your suit lasts from summer to summer, update it with a colourful sarong or scarf or cover-up with a classic white shirt.

The Summer of the Dress

You've heard it here first. I am officially declaring 2007 The Summer of the Dress. And, long may it last! It's supposed to be a long, hot summer and no matter the occasion, there's nothing simpler, cooler or more satisfying than slipping on the perfect dress and a great pair of shoes. The stores are stacked with a wonderful variety right now. Here's a selection.

Casual

An alternative to the weekend wardrobe of shorts, capris and Bermudas is the casual dress. This soft, green, jersey version from American Eagle can go from city, to beach to cottage in style and comfort. Simply add low to medium heeled sandals or flip-flops. That's it! Best suited to balanced figures.

Dress it up or dress it down

Arguably, the most adaptable dress of the season is the jersey halter. It looks equally as gorgeous with flats for day, as heels for evenings out, parties or other special occasions. You can even wear it with a wrap cardie or shirt over top to the office. Here's Banana Republic's version in hot orange. An adapable style for a variety of figure-types. Good coverage for larger busts and looser (but not too flouncy skirt), disguises hips and tummies.

Office Dress Code
Talking of office attire, the shirt dress is a welome addition to many a working wardrobe. In addition to a great smart, casual look, it's an easy option on those "don't know what to wear days" and works with a variety of footwear, from sandals to pumps to flats (for more dress down days.) There are many cool, cotton versions available (most with a hint of stretch.) Here's Banana Republic's take on the crisp, white shirt. Again, a great option for a variety of balanced figures, no matter your size. Should be fitted, but not so tight that buttons pull.

Tropical Temptation
Hey, the temperatures are supposed to be Tropical this summer, so why not let the Tropics be the inspiration in cool cotton. American Eagle has this Batik beauty in store. This a surprisingly adapatable style as this dress designed to flow rather that fit. Due to the ruched top, those with small to medium busts will feel the most comfortable.

Floaty and feminine
What could be more feminine than a summery dress? Well, the floaty, layered look is hard to beat (especially in white.). Reminds me of those 70s perfume commercials with models running along the beach or through a sunflower-filled meadow. Not sure if this trend will last, so if you love it, no need to spend a lot. Check out Old Navy for a look like this.

Flirty and Feminine
Flouncy, bouncy dresses aren't for everyone, but if you can pull-off this super-feminine style, go for it! Again, don't spend a fortune - this look isn't going to last. In the meantime, have fun in a look like this from Old Navy.

Mellow Yellow
Have you noticed yellow is cropping up everywhere? It's definitely refreshing. If this colour suits you, shine throughout the summer in a bright or mellow dress. This version is from Victoria's Secret in an adaptable wrap that flatters most figures.

Check-it!
Check into summer with this perfect pattern. I've seen it in shorts and shirts, but I think it look best in a dress or a skirt. (Rhyme intended.) This strapless version from American Eagle is not too overwhelming and would work with flats or heels from casual to office with a jacket or contrasting cardie. Strapless styles obviously place focus on the shoulders, arms and chest. So if these are your best assets, go for it!

Salute to the 60's
Geometric prints and short shifts are are showing up everywhere. Take a look at a toned-down version of the Twiggy-trend for office and evening wear. Awesome Banana Republic option featured here is best suited to slimmer figures.
Plain and Simple
What can I say? This is plain, purple and pretty. A modified version of this season's empire waist is suited to most body types. American Eagle. As per comments, spaghetti straps are not so flattering or comfortable for those with larger busts. However, this dress is a lovely option for those with a smaller top. Also disguises hips and tummies while keeping the focus on great arms and shoulders.

It's a Wrap
The winter wonder - the wrap dress, has been transported to summer with options from patterns to plain. An outstanding option for the office and, with a 3/4 sleeve version, you'll be fabulous right through to Fall. Animal print wrap from The Shoe Company. Wrap dresses are so verstaile and suit most figure types from tall to petite, slim to curvy. The key is the right fit and smooth underwear.

Shop at the mall, look like a million

The Real Canadian Style Philosophy is that you can create your own chic looks by shopping at the brand name stores found across the country and online. You might not be spending a million bucks, but you sure want to look like it. Here's how...

Study the stylish - Think of the looks you admire and try to emulate them. (Note, emulate, not a carbon copy - you want to have a look all of your own.) Follow what celebrities or friends and colleagues you admire are wearing. (Jennifer Anniston - yes! Britney - Nooooo!) Flick through magazines or visit the stores that feature the styles you like. Banana Republic, The Gap, RW & Co. are among my favourites. It's like a personal shopper has narrowed down the looks for you to try. This look is from Banana Republic. The black top would work equally well with jeans of any colour or under a business suit. the black purse and sandals are mainstays, and the red skirt is a special piece which could be worn with a variety of tops from a crisp white shirt to a delicate cami.

Classic makes the cut - Looking expensive for less, usually starts with a classic piece or two, such as a great pair of jeans or a fabulous jackets in neutral shades such as black, dark or subdued blue, white and naturals. Classic still means contemporary. There can be a fine line between classic and frumpy or out-dated, so keep those classics up to date with an appropriate alteration or by investing anew. And, this us where you should invest. Know that you will be wearing jeans most days? Then it might be worth spending a little extra to get the quality and cut that suits you. Add trendy tops and some awesome accessories each season and you're ready to go. Wow! This Gap leather jacket in a classic shade of brown will work in a casual closet for years to come.

Trendy temptations - Take a look at the trends, but avoid designs and colours that don't suit you or your lifestyle. For example, skinny pants might be hot - but not if they don't look or feel right on you. Same goes for colour trends (hot pink just isn't for everyone), neither are large sunglasses or blingy accessories.
Less is more - Talking of accessories, one or two perfect pieces is usually enough. Same goes for patterns, fabric adornments and bright colours. So wear a simple top with a floral skirt or a classic pair of pants with a frilly shirt, or add a hit of a bright colour to basics such as black or white. Gem tote from Roots.

Try something new - Stuck in a style rut? Take a friend shopping, visit a store off your usual beat and try something you wouldn't normally wear. You may be surprised by what suits you. Similarly, head to your hair stylist for an honest answer on whether your hairstyle/colour still works, and review your make-up with an expert at a pharmacy or department store. Here's an outfit suggestion from Old Navy. Even low-priced whites usually look expensive. No point spending a lot on a one season trends such as a flared top.

Sale away - Everyone loves a deal, but only purchase that special offer if it's something you would wear normally or a new look you wnat to try. Really, check-out the sales for those investment pieces though, rare to find, but a real treasure haul if you do.
The right fit - Wearing anything too loose or too tight can add pounds, no matter your size. These days, clothes tend to be form fitting to emphasize our assets. And, talking of those assets - make sure the focus is on your best features by using shape and colour. For example, wear darker colours on the bottom to play down larger hips. Avoid spaghetti straps if you have a very large bust. Petites can be overwhelmed by long jackets and large patterns, so think proportionally too.
Age appropriate - Wearing anything too young or too old for your age group adds years. In your twenties and early thirties? Have fun with the latest looks. Occasion appropriate - You want to stand out in the crowd for your great sense of style, not just, well...stand out. The old adage of dressing slightly smarter than the occasion calls for is tried and true. A "casual" dress code in the workplace means business casual - not jeans, sneakers and a T-shirt. Take your lead from how the senior executives dress and interpret your own way. An event calls for "black tie"? That means you can go all out and wear a fabulous long or, at minimum, a cocktail dress.
Building the foundations - Underwear and footwear are your building blocks. Update tired underwear with seamfree versions. (Review your sizing too. Brands change their measurements and our bodies change over time as well.) Are shoes accessories or are clothes accessories to your shoes? Depends on your point of view. But, make sure you have some awesome and adaptable footwear in your closet that will work with just about anything. A great pair of boots, heels or flats and summertime sandals.
The comfort zone - If it doesn't feel right, don't wear it. You won't feel comfortable and subsequently won't look your best. Try your purchases on again at home , and only buy from stores with a great returns policy, in case you change your mind.

Welcome back. It has been fantastic to receive your e-mails and comments. So, this article is in response to a reader question about white. And, no, it's not too early to wear white. Wearing white is not restricted to the days between the May long weekend and Labour Day anymore. Wearing Summer white is more about the temperature than the time of year. It needs to be a hot day to wear it, because white is cool in more ways than one. Although, wearing it on rainy days is risky - white goes transparent quite quickly and dirty water marks up the back of white pant legs are annoying.

I LOVE white. No other colour is so fresh and adaptable (apart from its opposite, black.) White can be casual, formal or sporty and is always feminine. There's lot of white around in the stores for Spring and Summer, so here as a salute to white with some "white ideas":

What works in white? - Almost anything - jeans, skirts, shirts, shorts, tanks, t's and dresses, (even swimwear.) I'm loving the soft dreamy white skirts and dress that are appearing in the stores right now. (Makes you want to skip through a meadow.) I'm just not sure where I would wear them, but for anyone who attends a lot of parties or if you're going on a cruise or to a nice resort, they're perfect, like this one from Victoria's Secret online. On a more practical note, white shirts, T's and tanks add lightness to any outfit and are an easy way to transition into Summer. For more than a basic look, go for something ruffled, ruched or embroidered. (This white tunic is from The Gap.) White pants and suits always look sharp. Tailored suits are definitely for smart work environments or occasions. Linen creates a more relaxed look (especially wide-legged pants). Personally, I think a pair of "dress-em up or down" white pants in linen, cotton or bootcut jeans, is one of the most useful items in a wardrobe. I love these from The Gap.

What to wear with white? - Almost any colour looks great with white from pastels to neutrals to brights. To keep the softness of white, I prefer neutral or muted shades with it, such as brown, olive green or dusty blue. For impact, pair whites with brights such as turquoise or pink. Be careful of head to toe white (a bit Abba-like.) And then there's the classic - black and white. It's hard to beat this combination which works from formal to casual looks and is a great colour combination to transition into the season. This look from Esprit.

Under white - Lingerie experts agree that skintone underwear shows through less under white than white. This is good advice, but somehow white undies feel nicer. Ah, well - another of life's little mysteries. Here's an everyday set from La Senza.

The white fit - White is one of the least forgiving colours if a garment doesn't fit right. Too tight white pants or skirts will reveal your undies (no matter what colour you choose to wear underneath.) Tight white tops can suddenly look cheap. And, tight white adds pounds. Baggy whites also adds pounds. And, keep your own scale in mind. A long white jacket or trench can resemble a lab coat on someone who is petite. This sleek linen jacket is from Banana Republic.

The right white - You don't need to spend a lot to find something stylish in white. Just be careful of fabrics that are too thin or don't look white enough.

The white foot - White shoes have received a bad rap over the years, due to the overwhelming boat-like pumps that were popular back in the 80s. Now there are lots of lovely white shoes in the shops. The white care - Yes, white gets dirty quickly. But it looks so good, it's worth a little extra laundry. I've found that a product called Amaze (a powder that you throw in with a white load) works wonders on even the worst stains. (Trust me, I have two boys!) Look for it in the detergent isle at the grocery store. Also, I know people who swear by the new Tide portable stain remover pen.

Beat the "don't know what to wear blues"

No other change in season is more welcome in Canada than when winter at last gives way to warm Spring days. And arguably, it's the time of year we suffer from the "don't know what to wear blues" the most. It's probably because peeling off the layers makes us feel a little vulnerable. It takes a while to feel comfortable with bare legs and exposed skin, and settle into the new looks of the season.

Here are a few ideas for transitional pieces that can be worn now, work with many of last year's summer pieces that you are pulling out of your closet, and take you right through the summer season.

Bermuda's are back! Just like a knee-length skirt, the knee-skimming Bermuda is flattering on most body types. Dress it up for the office with heels and a jacket or shirt, or wear with flats, flip-flops or espadrilles for a more casual look with T's, and with tanks and camisoles when the temperature starts to soar.

Topping up your T's? Last years T's might be looking a little tired. If you are thinking a topping up your supply, consider more than basic v and round necks to update your jeans, capris, summer pants and skirts. Take a look at ruched and subtle ruffled designs or the new fitted polo for a sleek, sporty look. White is hot, as are jewel-inspired brights and muted neutral shades. Take your pick. I learned about wardrobe-building from two radically different times in my life.

As a teenage exchange student spending time in France, I noticed how French women create their stylish look with relatively few pieces. While I had used this technique over the years, I really honed this skill many years later when building a pregnancy wardrobe. It’s truly amazing how far a few key pieces such as a great pair of jeans, black pants, black skirt, a white shirt, some basic T’s, great boots and a few funky accessories can take you.

Now, just like every one else, I was sick of my maternity gear after nine months, and it’s no fun to have such a limited choices in the long term, but the theory is sound – get strong foundations in place – and add to them. So take a look at the items you wear most often and spend the majority of your clothing budget on new pieces that work with them. The 80/20 rule is applicable to most wardrobes – that is 20% is worn 80% of the time. The goal is to flip those percentages around so that 80% are useful and stylish items that you can wear everyday, and 20% are fabulous items that, while not worn as frequently, are on standby for special occasions, such as that anniversary dinner or family formal.

Wardrobe-building basics:

Underwear - when was the last time you changed your underwear (no, I don't mean that)I mean the style of underwear you wear! Does it still work with your clothes (no lumps or lines?) Does it feel comfortable? Does it look tired? Even if you are the only who sees it - great underwear should also look good. So be honest with yourself, and see what's new out there.
